What if King Mondo was destroyed in his first appearance?

King Mondo was built up as this massive, metallic juggernaut, but his early fights were often underwhelming. If the Zeo Rangers had found a way to destroy him in his debut, the Machine Empire would have collapsed into infighting immediately. It would have been a shocking subversion of the “new big bad” trope.

With Mondo gone, Louie Kaboom would have become the permanent main villain much earlier. His chaotic, egotistical style would have drastically changed the tone of Zeo. The show would have leaned heavily into comedy, as Kaboom was far less threatening and much more prone to ridiculous mistakes than the calculating Mondo.

The Machine Empire’s hierarchy would have fractured. Prince Sprocket, Queen Machina, and Klank would have either fled or tried to usurp each other. We might have seen a multi-episode arc where the Rangers actually had to mediate a Machine civil war, choosing the lesser of two evils to prevent total chaos in Angel Grove.

Rita and Zedd, watching from the sidelines, would have realized how weak the Machines truly were. They might have launched a counter-invasion much sooner, attempting to reclaim the Earth while the Machines were leaderless. This would have set up an incredible three-way war between the Rangers, the remnants of the Machines, and the Royal House of Gadgetry.

I always felt Mondo was a bit overhyped when I rewatched Zeo as an adult. He talked a big game but rarely delivered. Blowing him up in episode one would have been a massive twist. It would have taught kid-me that just because a villain looks scary doesn’t mean he’s invincible. It would have been a bold, unpredictable move.
