BLACK’s sixth episode, Riddle of the Secret Espers, shifts attention toward mystery and unusual abilities. The title suggests a puzzle involving people with extraordinary powers, fitting the original show’s interest in strange phenomena associated with Gorgom’s activities. As in the preceding episodes, Kotaro must confront threats whose meaning is not immediately obvious, rather than simply defeating an enemy whose motives are already clear.

Both episodes use uncertainty to keep the viewer engaged, but MY-TH’s uncertainty is increasingly interpersonal. Vanken’s intervention challenges the assumptions behind Jyao’s pursuit, suggesting that the conflict may not be as straightforward as it first appeared. BLACK uses mystery to deepen its world of strange powers and secret schemes. The contrast is between a newer series that is building a complicated network of competing Riders and an older series that makes the hero investigate the hidden workings of a dangerous organization.
