What if Kimberly never wrote the “Dear John” letter to Tommy?

The “Dear John” letter is one of the most infamous moments in MMPR history, breaking the hearts of a million kids. If Kimberly had stayed, her relationship with Tommy would have continued through the Zeo era. We would have been spared the incredibly awkward introduction of Katherine as Tommy’s new love interest immediately after Kim’s departure.

Kimberly’s presence in Zeo would have changed the Pink Ranger dynamics entirely. Instead of Kat taking over the Pink Crane Zord, Kim would have been the Pink Zeo Ranger. This would have kept the original core intact longer, but it might have stunted Kat’s growth from a manipulated antagonist into a trusted hero. Kim’s gymnastics would have translated well into the Zeo fighting styles, though.

Professionally, Kimberly’s sudden departure to Florida for a gymnastics pipeline was always a bit unrealistic. If she stayed, the writers would have had to balance her high school/college ambitions with her Ranger duties. We might have seen a storyline where she struggles with burning out, forcing the team to rally around her rather than just replacing her.

Tommy’s character arc in Zeo wouldn’t have been as focused on his lingering heartbreak and leadership burdens. With Kim by his side, Tommy would have been more emotionally stable, but perhaps less relatable as the brooding, troubled leader. The subtle tension that made Zeo Tommy so compelling would have been replaced by standard superhero boyfriend content.

Looking back as an adult, I understand why the actress needed to leave, but the letter was a terrible way to handle it. Keeping Kim around would have been the ultimate fan service, but it would have prevented Tommy from becoming the standalone icon he is today. Sometimes, breaking up your favorite fictional couple is exactly what a story needs to grow up.
