Losing Alpha 5 during such a critical moment would have compounded the tragedy of Tommy losing his powers. Alpha was the emotional heart of the Command Center; his panic and distress were how the audience knew things were going wrong. His destruction would have left Zordon completely isolated, stripping the team of their technical support and their most sympathetic ally.
Zordon’s character would have darkened significantly. The grief of losing his longtime robotic companion, combined with the failure to save the Green Ranger, might have caused Zordon to make rash decisions. He could have become a colder, more militant mentor, pushing the remaining Rangers too hard in a desperate bid to defeat Rita.
The introduction of a new robotic assistant, perhaps an early version of Alpha 6 would have felt jarring and unwelcome. The new AI would have lacked Alpha 5’s endearing quirks and anxiety, creating friction with the Rangers who were still mourning the original. The dynamic in the Command Center would have felt sterile and professional rather than familial.
Rita would have crossed a line that even her own minions might have flinched at. Destroying a non-combatant like Alpha would have unified the Rangers in a deep, personal vendetta. The remaining episodes of Season 1 would have had a distinct tone of vengeance, with the Rangers actively hunting Rita’s forces rather than just reacting to their attacks.
Alpha 5 was my favorite character as a kid. “Ai yi yi” is permanently burned into my brain. If Rita had destroyed him, I would have hated her with a passion that no other villain ever matched. It would have been great drama, but it would have ripped the comforting soul right out of the show. Some things are too sacred to break.
