The Quitter is one of those episodes from that old nineties show that really stays with you because it changes up the whole vibe of the team. Usually you see these four Beverly Hills kids working together to fight off whatever rubber monster Emperor Gorganus sends down to Earth, but this time around, the evil brain creature Neuragula messes with Lauries head. He hits her with a blast that turns her into a totally selfish brat, and before you know it, she just up and walks away from her duties as a Galactic Sentinel. It really makes you think about how fragile a team can be when one person decides they have had enough and just walks out on the people depending on them.
Watching the rest of the crew try to handle things without her is where the story gets good. Gordon, Drew, and Swinton have to figure out how to step up their game because they are lacking that fourth piece of the puzzle to form their big giant fighter, Nitron. They try their best to hold the line, but you can see the struggle is real when you lose a teammate. The funniest part is how they finally get through to Laurie by doing these crazy dance moves, like Swinton doing rock and roll and Drew doing ballet, just to break the mind control. It is completely ridiculous to look at, but it shows how far true friends will go to bring you back when you lose your way.
Even though the special effects are super cheap and look like something someone built in a garage, the heart of the episode is solid. Laurie coming back to her senses and realizing she has a whole list of apologies to make gives the story a nice bit of reality. We all make mistakes or let our bad attitudes get the better of us sometimes, so seeing her own up to her behavior makes her feel like a real person instead of just a cheesy superhero. It is a standout episode from that single season because it reminds you that you cannot just quit when things get tough.
