The Brain Drain from this show takes the idea of foolishness to a whole new level. In this story, the main villain Emperor Gorganus sends a psychic monster named Neuragula down to Earth. This creature uses a strange device to suck away all the intelligence and brain power from the people living in Beverly Hills. It turns every regular person into an absolute dimwit in an instant, which makes for some of the most hilarious and ridiculous television you could ever watch from that era.
What makes this particular story interesting to me is how the teenagers are affected by the attack. The only reason the team leader Gordon does not lose his mind is because he happens to be wearing a special invention created by his nerdy friend Swinton. Because that device reflects the spell, Gordon stays completely normal while his teammates and the rest of the town turn into complete nutcases. It forces this young man to grow up fast and carry the entire weight of the world on his own shoulders while his friends are busy acting like total fools who cannot even understand basic instructions.
By the time the final battle arrives, Gordon has to stand up and fight the psychic monster completely alone to buy enough time for their blob leader Nimbar to fix the minds of the other warriors. The fight scenes look incredibly cheap with people jumping around in tight spandex costumes on very small sets, but you still root for the young man to win. It does not take a university degree to see that the writing is pure nonsense, but there is a real charm in how it handles the theme of responsibility. It is a goofy piece of entertainment that reminds me of how creative and genuinely unpredictable children television used to be back in the nineties.
