Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters from Beverly Hills: Review: Switch

The fourth episode, titled “Switch” really shows how crazy these low-budget live-action kid shows could get. In this particular story, the main villain, Emperor Gorganus, sends down an electronic monster named Voldec to mess with the power portals. When the four chosen teenagers from California step into the portal to go fight, something goes completely wrong. The machine tampers with their energy, and they end up switching bodies and genders with each other.
Now, when you see a story like this, it makes you think about how hard it is to walk in another person shoes. Gordon and Laurie swapping lives creates a whole mess of confusion, especially since Gordon tries to keep his regular habits, like wearing his favorite neckties, even while he is trapped in Laurie body. It is a funny way to show how we stick to our identity when everything around us changes. The teenagers are already stressed out trying to balance high school with saving the world, and now they cannot even rely on their own hands and feet.
As a viewer, you really feel for these kids because they have to put aside their panic and figure out how to operate completely different bodies while a giant electrical monster is trying to destroy their planet. The way they wrap up the battle is where the real lesson comes in. Their usual big attack fails because Voldec is just too powerful with his extra electrical output. It takes their blob leader, Nimbar, to pump extra energy directly from the home planet sources to overload the monster and send the kids back through the portal to fix their bodies.
Even though the costumes and special effects look very cheap and silly today, the heart of the episode is about teamwork. They could not win by acting like individuals, they had to understand each other deeply to fight as one unit. It is a goofy piece of television history, but it reminds you that you have to adapt when life throws a sudden change at you.
