The story kicks off with Laurie going out on a date with a young man named Brad, which immediately sets off alarm bells for Gordon. Instead of minding his own business or talking straight, Gordon decides to overhear a rumor that Brad is planning to treat Laurie poorly and dump her. To stop the date, Gordon uses a rigged system to make his tattoo flash, which essentially tricks Laurie into thinking there is an emergency. This part of the episode really highlights how insecure people will create a massive fire just to put out a tiny spark that is bothering them.
While Gordon is playing his foolish games on earth, the villain Emperor Gorganus is making actual moves from his distant stronghold. He decides to send an upgraded version of Isolus, the terrifying ice monster, to freeze the world and destroy the protectors. The contrast between the petty teenage drama in the restaurant and the literal freezing threat of the alien monster is brilliant in a very campy way. The director does a great job showing how real danger can creep up on you while you are busy focusing on false alarms that you created yourself.
When Gordon actually needs help because the ice monster is freezing everything, Laurie refuses to believe him because he already played with her trust. It is the classic ancient fable brought to life in sunny California with flashy outfits and monster battles. The action ends up requiring the team to put aside the nonsense and combine their powers, but the bitter taste of the lie remains. It is a solid episode that balances ridiculous monster fights with a genuine lesson about why you should never cry wolf.
