One interesting thing about Super Sentai is that it effectively contains two types of superhero fantasy. One is the costumed warrior fighting at human scale, while the other is the giant robot pilot fighting enormous monsters.
That gave the franchise a wider range of action. A viewer could enjoy martial-arts choreography, explosions, weapons, transformation scenes, and then suddenly get a completely different kind of battle involving gigantic machines.
The robots also created an opportunity for toy companies to sell products that were very different from Ranger costumes and weapons. Combining robots were especially appealing because children could physically recreate the transformation and combination process.
As the years went on, robot designs became increasingly elaborate. Auxiliary machines could combine with the main robot, form new configurations, or provide specialized weapons for particular enemies.
That combination of human-scale and giant-scale action became one of the reasons Super Sentai remained so visually exciting. The heroes could win a fight with a sword one minute and pilot a gigantic robot the next.
