The main enemy of Gorenger was the Black Cross Army, led by the mysterious Black Cross Führer. The organization gave the original series a large-scale enemy that could repeatedly challenge the heroes.

The Black Cross Army wasn’t simply a collection of unrelated monsters. It functioned as a villainous organization with soldiers, commanders, spies, weapons, and specialized monsters.

That organizational structure became one of the most important traditions in Super Sentai. Almost every later season would feature some form of villain organization with its own hierarchy.

The Black Cross Army also helped establish the idea that the heroes weren’t fighting just one villain. They were fighting an entire system of enemies.

That concept would eventually become one of the most recognizable features of Super Sentai, with later organizations ranging from the Machine Empire and Bandora’s forces to the Jakanja, Gedoushu, Zangyack, and many others.
