After Gorenger finished, Shotaro Ishinomori returned with J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai.
The name J.A.K.Q. comes from playing-card terminology: Jack, Ace, King, and Queen.
That playing-card concept was incorporated into the characters and their powers, giving the series a very different visual identity from Gorenger.
J.A.K.Q. was also more heavily centered on cyborg characters. The heroes possessed mechanical enhancements that gave them specialized abilities.
Although J.A.K.Q. was not as successful as Gorenger, it became an important part of Super Sentai history because it helped establish that each new series could have a completely different theme.
The franchise was already experimenting with new concepts very early in its existence. That willingness to reinvent itself would eventually become one of Super Sentai’s greatest strengths.
