Before Battle Fever J, Super Sentai had already featured giant-scale action, but Battle Fever J helped establish the giant robot as a regular and central part of the franchise’s identity. That was an enormous change because the robot could now become the heroes’ ultimate weapon against giant monsters.

Battle Fever Robo gave the team something that was visually separate from their normal costumes and weapons. The heroes could fight on the ground, defeat an enemy’s normal-sized form, and then transition into a gigantic mechanical battle.

That basic structure became one of Super Sentai’s most recognizable formulas. Eventually almost every season developed its own collection of robots, combination sequences, weapons, transformations, and finishing attacks.

The robots also became characters in their own right. Although many were machines rather than living beings, fans became attached to their designs, weapons, pilots, and combinations.

Without this development, Super Sentai would probably look very different today. The giant-robot battle became so important that it eventually became one of the franchise’s defining features alongside the Rangers themselves.
