Ryoga Hakua, the AbaRed, was not presented as a perfect superhero from the beginning. His personality and personal responsibilities helped make him different from some of the more traditionally heroic Red Rangers.

His relationship with his young daughter, Mai, gave him an important emotional motivation.

Instead of simply fighting because he had been chosen to become a Ranger, Ryoga also had personal responsibilities outside the battles.

That family element helped make him feel like a more mature hero.

AbaRed therefore showed how the Red Ranger role could be adapted to different kinds of personalities and life situations.
