Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters from Beverly Hills was always a wild ride back in the nineties, but the eighth episode titled Commitments really shows how the writers could cook up something special out of pure cheese. The whole setup is hilarious because you have this giant glowing blob named Nimbar running low on juice, and the only way to fix the problem is to borrow a fancy diamond tennis bracelet belonging to Gordons mother. To get their hands on it, Drew and Gordon have to play pretend and act like they are deeply in love.
It is the classic oil and water routine because these two Beverly Hills kids usually cannot stand each other, which makes watching them fake a relationship pure gold. What makes this particular story stay with you is how the fake romance starts messing with their heads. They are supposed to be focusing on saving the world from the evil Emperor Gorganus, but while they are putting on this big show, they actually start finding out they have a lot of common ground. The chemistry gets so thick that they almost forget about the mission entirely. It takes Laurie and Swinton stepping in to snap them back to reality before the whole power portal goes completely sideways.
It is a funny bit of human nature showing how quickly pretending to be close to someone can turn into something real when you least expect it.Looking back at it now, the show is clearly low budget with the rubber monsters and the tight spandex suits, but the heart in this episode is genuine. They did not have the big money like Power Rangers, but they made up for it by making the characters bicker and feel like real teenagers with actual attitudes. Commitments works because it stops focusing on the galactic war for a minute and dives into the messy stuff between a boy and a girl. It is definitely one of the standout moments from that single season run.
