Choujuu Sentai Liveman begins with former friends turning against their former companions. That made the conflict deeply personal from the start.

The villains weren’t simply strangers from another planet. Their actions were connected to relationships that existed before the main conflict.

That gave the heroes a reason to fight that was emotional as well as heroic. They weren’t merely protecting Earth; they were dealing with people they had once known.

Liveman also eventually expanded its team, creating another interesting contrast between the original members and new heroes.

The result was a season that combined science fiction, superhero action, friendship, betrayal, and redemption in a way that made it particularly memorable among late-1980s Super Sentai.
