Akarenger, the red warrior of Himitsu Sentai Gorenger, is much more than simply the first Red Ranger. Because Gorenger was the beginning of the Super Sentai television franchise, Akarenger effectively became the character who established what audiences could associate with the color red in a team of costumed heroes.
The design is also important because Akarenger helped create the visual language that later Red Rangers would keep developing. The helmet, visor, chest design, gloves, boots, and brightly colored suit gave viewers an immediately recognizable hero silhouette. Even though later costumes became much more elaborate, the basic idea remained surprisingly familiar.
Akarenger was also the leader of a team whose members had distinct colors and personalities. That meant the audience could identify a character quickly even during a fast action sequence. This simple visual communication became one of the most useful ideas in the franchise.
Over the decades, Akarenger repeatedly returned in anniversary productions, crossover movies, special appearances, and other celebrations of Super Sentai history. His presence in these projects is basically a reminder that the franchise always knows where its roots are.
So when modern Super Sentai celebrates its history, Akarenger is almost impossible to leave out. He represents the beginning of the road that eventually led to dozens of teams, hundreds of heroes, countless robots, and generations of fans.
