The Gaorangers could use numerous Power Animals beyond the main combination. This meant the team’s giant-robot arsenal could change depending on the situation. Different animals could be attached, exchanged, or combined to create specialized configurations.
This approach made the mecha side of Gaoranger feel almost like collecting a group of legendary creatures. Each new animal had its own appearance and personality, while also contributing something useful to the overall fighting ability of the team.
The concept was also perfect for Super Sentai merchandising. Children could recognize individual animals and imagine their own combinations. The show itself encouraged that kind of creativity by constantly changing the team’s formations.
The auxiliary animals also gave individual Rangers opportunities to stand out. A Ranger could sometimes be associated more strongly with a particular Power Animal, making the giant machines feel connected to the characters rather than just being interchangeable pieces of equipment.
Gaoranger therefore helped push the collectible-mecha concept to another level. Its large assortment of animals became one of the season’s defining features and helped make its robot designs particularly memorable.
