What if Billy remained a Ranger instead of Tanya in Zeo?

Keeping Billy in the Zeo lineup would have preserved the heart of the original team. However, behind the scenes, David Yost’s struggles were leading to his departure, so let’s imagine a world where he was perfectly happy. Billy as the Zeo Ranger I (Pink) would have been hilarious and slightly jarring, forcing him out of his technological comfort zone into a more agile, close-combat role.

If not Pink, perhaps Billy would have taken the Gold Ranger powers earlier, acting as the bridge between the Zeo Crystal and the extraterrestrial powers of Trey. Billy’s intellect would have allowed him to analyze the Gold Ranger’s staff in ways Jason never did. He might have figured out a way to stabilize the powers without needing to pass them around.

Tanya would have been left without a role, completely altering her character arc. We would have missed out on her journey from the African wilderness to becoming a confident, modern teenager. Her presence brought a fresh dynamic to the team that Billy, as a seasoned veteran, simply couldn’t provide. The show needed new blood to match the new Zords.

The technological synergy between Billy and the Zeo Zords would have been unmatched. Instead of just piloting them, Billy might have been able to modify the Zeo Megazord on the fly, adding weapons or shields based on real-time data from the Command Center. He would have essentially been a Ranger and a mission control operator simultaneously.

As an adult fan who appreciates Billy as the underrated backbone of the original team, I’d love to have seen him get a full Zeo run. But as a student of television, I know that keeping the entire original cast through three seasons is almost impossible. Tanya brought a vital energy to Zeo, even if saying goodbye to Billy was tough.
