DC’s Lanterns: Review: Trust Fall
“Trust Fall” is a brilliant second episode for HBO’s Lanterns, perfectly anchoring the cosmic weight of the Green Lantern mythos into a gritty, earthbound detective drama. After a solid pilot, this follow-up really dives deep into the complex dynamic between veteran Hal Jordan and the rookie John Stewart. The tension between them feels incredibly authentic, moving past standard superhero tropes to give us a genuine mystery. It is a masterclass in building suspense while keeping the focus entirely on character growth.
The training sequences in this episode are easily the highlight, trading flashy action for psychological depth. Watching John try to master flight only to manifest a tiny, persistent green bird construct is both hilarious and telling. Hal’s tough-love, chaotic teaching style, like banging the ring on a table for a quick charge contrasts perfectly with John’s rigid, disciplined approach.
The fact that the bird stays alive even when John removes the ring introduces a fascinating new layer to how willpower works in the DCU. While John is off dealing with the ring charger, Hal’s investigative antics bring a heavy dose of dark comedy and plot progression. Crashing a town hall meeting just to sneak alien corpses out of a hospital morgue is peak Hal Jordan behavior, brilliantly balancing his cockiness with his sharp detective skills.
The episode also does a fantastic job of expanding the lore, delivering a massive reveal that positions the legendary Manhunters as the season’s big threat, which instantly raises the stakes for the entire series. Honestly, the chemistry between Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre is what makes this show a must-watch right now.
Pierre brings a grounded, powerful presence to John Stewart, while Chandler handles Hal’s veteran exhaustion and arrogance flawlessly. “Trust Fall” moves the story forward with great pacing and leaves you desperate to see how this space-cop partnership develops. If James Gunn’s DCU keeps delivering television at this level, we are in for an incredible ride.
