Lanterns: Review: Zoe Is The Manhunter
This episode really raised the stakes, and the absolute best part of it was the incredible dynamic between Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Picking up right after the flashback episode, we get this intense, tense energy where both guys are keeping massive secrets from each other. Hal is fresh off visiting Sinestro in space jail, who basically tells him he needs to kill John or at least trick him into a trap. Meanwhile, the Guardian Lianna hits up John at the motel and tells him to just steal the ring by reciting the oath the next time Hal lets him train with it.
Watching these two partner up while both are being pressured to backstab each other creates this amazing, slow-burn friction that keeps you glued to the screen.The investigation takes them right into William Macon’s compound, and honestly, this gave us the wildest, most unhinged scene of the whole series so far. Macon, played brilliantly by Garret Dillahunt, completely catches everyone off guard by dropping his robe and demanding that John draw him naked. Hal’s reaction—saying he has seen some crazy things in outer space but this takes the cake—was absolutely hilarious and pure gold.
But beneath the weirdness, the plot drops a massive bomb: Macon reveals that the Manhunter actually cured his cancer, completely changing how we view what’s happening in Rushville. The town isn’t harboring a monster; they are protecting a savior who literally saved their lives.Then the ending completely shifts the playing field with the massive reveal that Zoe Macon is the Manhunter they’ve been tracking. The intimacy between her and John makes the twist hit way harder, turning a sci-fi detective show into something deeply personal. Just when you think they’re about to figure it out, her truck gets completely obliterated by an orbital laser operated by Hector Hammond.
It’s a chaotic, shocking cliffhanger that proves Zoe is definitely still alive and playing a much bigger game.Overall, this episode is a massive win for the series, balancing comic book lore with genuinely great character drama. Ulrich Thomsen’s brief return as Sinestro channels a chilling, Hannibal Lecter-style vibe that works perfectly for a cosmic noir. By throwing out the easy “good vs. evil” tropes and making the Manhunter a complex benefactor to the town, the show sets up a wild second half of the season. If you’ve been following along, this is easily the most engaging, well-paced episode yet.
